Mia and Ben are seven and live in two little houses that share one back garden, with a kennel in the middle for their puppy Pip and a tin-can telephone strung between their attic windows. The book opens at sea. Mia has rowed out to a tiny island and watched her boat drift away, so Ben sails over the curve of a little round world to fetch her, compass in hand and Pip at the bow. That evening it is Ben who is lost on the darkening water, until Mia runs to the striped lighthouse, flips the switch and lays a golden path across the sea to bring him in.
Between the adventures they practise being good friends. They lift a fallen chick back into its nest and push a plank across a broken footbridge so a duck family can cross the brook, where Pip's stepping stone turns out to be a turtle. On a sleepless night Ben sings to Mia from his window, and the song travels down the tin-can line until the notes turn into stars.
Every chorus brings them home to the shared garden for something a child can count along with: paper planes and a cat stalking four sparrows at the birdbath in spring, paper boats and giant bubbles round a paddling pool in summer, snowballs and a pair of mittens Pip will not give back in winter.
Then Ben has to take the little ferry. At the harbour a gull steals his cap, Mia gets a shoulder to lean on, and before the boat pulls away she gives him her yellow star hair clip. When he comes home the garden is deep in snow and he clips the star back into her hair. On the last page the two of them sail back to the island where it all began, in the golden light at the end of the day.
